Well, here's my first little set of whining... my opinions so far on the job they have done with the newly dubbed Sailor Moon episodes.
While many die-hard fans of the original series, either seeing it in raw Japanese or subtitled, hate the dub with a passion, I don't think it's too bad. Then again, I'm not a complete Moonie.
Having seeing a good chunk of Sailor Moon Supers fansubbed (thank you VKILL and Senshi TV), I think they did a pretty decent job this time around with the dub. But, as always, there are a few, minor, unforgettable sins that they did to the dub that somewhat ticked me off.
1)Haruka/Amara and Michiru/Michelle: The close loving relationship these two had in the original is gone in the dub. SURPRISE, SURPRISE. Every SM fan saw this one coming. It was expected because of the way Americans are in general. The U.S., unlike Japan, frowns upon same-sex relations. It's the same reason why Zoisite changed genders in the first season (Him/her and Kunzite/Malachite were lovers), and it's the same reason why Amara and Michelle are cousins in the Supers dub. I'm not really mad about this one since it was expected to happen. Blame American society for that one.
2)The attack names: Okay, I'm just nitpicking on this one. Everyone with new attacks (Moon and the outers) kept their attack names intact, except for the common planet name added in a la the inners(Ex. Neptune Deep Submerge). That's okay, but there is like NO continuity in the attack calling! For example, Jupiter's Sparkling Wide Pressure was called "Jupiter Thundercrash/Thunderclap (I forget) Zap!" in the R dub. It got changed back to the original name in the newer dubs (sorta like what they did with Mercury and Shine Aqua Illusion). But that's not all... the SAME attack was even called "Jupiter Power" on more than one occasion. Weird.
PINK SUGAR HEART ATTACK!!!! *n.n* Sorry...had to get that out my system.
3)The way everyone speaks: The way they talk also irritated me in the original dub. I felt like I was watching "Clueless" (a rather funny movie, I might add) when the girls spoke sometimes. One example that comes into mind is the episode with Elizabeth (Unazuki in the original) greeting Serena with a "What's up, dog?" I laughed my ass off after hearing that.
If they ever dub Sailor Stars (not likely), I bet they'll have Yaten going "WAAZZZZZAAAAAAAAAAP!!!" Nevermind the fact that that little phrase will be old and ran into the ground by the time someone even thinks about that series.
4)The voices: The old anime dubbing law stands here: "The original voices always sound better." All too true here. Molly's voice is still annoying. The outers' voices sound horrible compared to their original seiyuu.
5)Sailor *Mini-Moon*: That name irritates me to no end. I know it's a somewhat accurate translation for Sailor Pink-Haired Flamingo Virus--I mean Sailor Chibi-Moon, but still...the name's just evil. Don't you just think of Mini-Me from Austin Powers 2 when you hear that name? But seriously, if they can keep Hotaru's name the same, why not keep Chibi-Moon? It's not that difficult!!
And the worst sin of them all in the Supers dub.... 6)THE INFAMOUS "CUTE ELEPHANT" SCENE: Oh, how I laugh my head off everytime I watch this scene in the fansub. This is probably the funniest scene in all of the anime I've ever watched....and it got butchered. It was hacked to the point that it lost all the humor behind it. The part where the "Crayon Shin-chan" kid pulled his pants down was even edited out. Bastards....I loved that scene in the original. T_T On the bright side, they didn't edit it out completely; or even worse, cut out the whole episode.
Well, that's all of the problems I had with the dub. But of course, there are its good points. For example, they kept all the original music. However, they did Americanize "Ai no Senshi", another thing that slightly ticked me off. But to hear the transform music for the Outer Senshi (the beautiful music you hear on this page) cancels out that problem.
Yes, I know the good points section is a lot smaller than the list of bad points, but ah well, I've whined long enough!
